The reason given for adding hours to the school day is to make American students competitive with students in other countries, yet students in Asian and European countries ( who consistently score higher than American students) spend fewer hours in school than we do. Maybe the problem isn't that we spend too little time in school, maybe it's that the schools we spend time in are inadequate. Spending an extra 3 hours a day in school won't help if we're not learning anything during regular school hours.

Do you agree with the proposal?

I agree with the proposal to some extent. Kids do get very distracted during the summer, that they don't even think about school/education. When teenagers see fun right in front of them oh boy will they take it. If we had more schools I believe it would help kids remember things more efficient. But at the same time. I think school hours are really long. I think Obama should come to a happy medium, make more school days, and make school days shorter.

Do you agree with a longer school year?

Yes I do agree. Kids forget A LOT over the summer. So increasing the school days would just help children remember more.

Do you agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future?

I don't agree that our education system will impact our future, because our education system is already really smart. People are increasing in intelligence everyday. To get in to a selective enrollment high school is like getting into college, that's how competitive it is now.

What ideas do you have to propose to improve the current educational system?

I think school days should be shorter because kids spend so much time in school, they deserve to have some of the day to them. A normal teenagers day at school is school for 8 hours or more, then practice after school, home, dinner, homework, and sleep, for 5 days a week. That's so much to put on teenagers, especially younger ones.
I do believe that the school years should be longer though. I think it would increase the student population to remember more information after summer break.

I am in between both sides. I agree that it has positive impacts on children but I also think that I can also have negative impacts.
I don't think making the year longer is a good idea, one thing is to make the days longer but too also make the year longer is too much. I think that our education does impact our future and students should be well prepared but only to an extant. I do think that making school days longer is a good idea and but I also think that all schools should have an after school program to offer any student help and also a nonmanditory summer course that can help students get a jump start to the new school year.

Do you agree with the proposal?

I agree with half of the proposal. I agree that the school year should be longer but I do not agree that the school days should be longer. I think that kids spend enough time during the day in classes seeing as they then have to go to a practice or club after school, do homework, and still get adequate sleep.

Do you agree with a longer school year?

I agree that the school year should be longer, or that there should be a different scheduling of the breaks. Kids should still be in school throughout part of the summer, which would then shorten summer vacation but would lengthen the two other breaks we have.

Do you agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future?

Yes, I agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future. Test scores show that we are clearly behind and in need of improvement. I believe that we can only get better and raising our standards can help that.

What ideas do you have to propose to improve the current educational system?

One way I think we can improve the current educational system is to make the actual time spent during school more beneficial to kids. Proper teaching methods and the right tools to learn need to be provided in every classroom. Also, kids who need extra help should have the resources easily available.

hailee said...

Do you agree with the proposal?

I agree with the part of the proposal that says students need longer school year. However, not with longer school days because we need to spare some time to participate in clubs and extra curricular activities or even just some time to sleep and take a break. Life is not just about school, there are other things that are as essential as knowledge: healthy body, good conducts, life-saving skills, etc. Plus, there is also homework, quizzes, and tests that we need to spend time on. It’s not like once we get out of school, we are done with the work of the day. Less school time does not equal to less studying and homework time. Therefore, we should have longer school year but not longer school days.

Do you agree with a longer school year?

Yes, I agree with a longer school year because it is very true that human beings are forgetful. After summer vacation, the stuff students have learned in the past school year will gradually turn vague and fade away. Also, you would find yourself harder to concentrate and study, which causes the failing grades after breaks. Extending the school year by reducing the summer vacation would definitely prevent that to happen.

Do you agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future?

Yes, there would be a direct impact on our future because lagging education systems would result in the uncompetitive-ness of U.S. students, which would put disadvantages on our society development.

What ideas do you have to propose to improve the current educational system?

In order to improve our current educational system, our government should put more focus on those “low-score” schools because they are the ones that are dragging our educational progress behind. Also, reducing the drop-out rate for high school would also be very important. Therefore, more resources and tutoring should be put in those schools in order to average out our educational level.

Lamar G. said...

I understand where President Obama is coming from with his idea; however, the article states that Asian students score higher on mathematics tests and they don't spend as much time in school as we do now. That proves that there is a problem with the quality of education students receive in grade school and high school. Its evident that most neighborhood schools aren't well equipped with the resources needed to score well on standardized tests. Other times students--in both neighborhood and higher end schools--lack willingness to learn the material taught to them. There are some cases where students do not learn material because their teachers lack passion. Students who fit any of the explained circumstances lower the national average scores most of the time. Therefore, President Obama should try to reform the quality of education of schools nationwide instead. Obviously, this would be much more difficult than extending the school day, but it ultimately is where the issue lies. After this reform has taken place, our lagging nation would soon be back in the forefront of education.

Do you agree with the proposal?

I have to say i don't 100% agree with the proposal. There is so much to consider with this idea. Children in the U.S. should have that opportunity to learn more on a regular basis if they are driven to do so but even the brightest and most willing student may not be able to take an additional three hours of school a day. You have to think about the childs overall well being. Longer days, less time for activities, lack of sleep, fatigue in general, more homework and more to retain are all negative outcomes of the proposal. Although, if approached the right way, children could benefit from more face time with teachers and exposure to more learning material. I think in this situation the cons may outweigh the pros.

Do you agree with a longer school year?

I do believe a longer school year would be a good idea. I've never believed that so many months out of school would benefit students. At least their time would be spent more productively.

Do you agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future?

I do believe that the lagging educational systems will impact our futures. If the students of this country don't get motivated or inspired about challenging their minds and taking that extra step to know more we'll have generations of people who aren't motivated, inspired or willing in the future as well.

What ideas do you have to propose to improve the current educational system?

I don't think it's the system as much as i believe it's the parents/environment. If the childs surroundings are that of intelligence, accomplishments and hard work they'll at least have a foundation for being successful (in theory). They'll be expected and pushed to meet goals that they themselves choose or that the parents choose, but either way those goals will be strived for. You don't have to be CEO's or presidents of companies to show your child success and hard work. Any parent that shows their child that they should want to be better and that they can achieve anything through hard work shouldn't have a problem with their child and school. i think children just need a little instruction, motivation, and time from their parents and anyone else for that matter to want to be better. Parental involvment would be my only requirement for the proposal.

I agree with president Obama because kids from the U.S are definitely behind every other country. I don't think students will like it but in the end it will benefit them because they will be able to compete with other people from other countries for the same porfession. More schooling will make them more qualified and even be considered for the position.

Anthony J. said...

I disagree with the proposal for some of it but some of the proposal i do agree with. School is already long and i think maiking it longer would make kids get even more tired of school. Kids don't think about school over the summer but its a break time for kids that most of them look forward to.

I think if the school year is made longer then the school days should be shorter because kids need more education but they shouldnt get burnt out from school.

I think our education will impact our future. People are getting smarter evryday but we are still behind many other countries.

My proposal is to make the school year longer but make the school days shorter.

I dont agree with the proposal. I believe that we are already enough school time.

I dont agree with a longer school year. I do feel that the summer vacation is long but there are alot of fun activities you can do. Our life doesnt have to be all school. We should ues the summer to have fun.

I dont believe that our education system will impact our future. Our system has roven to be very good. It doesnt need extra days to to do better. Becouse of the education we are getting now we are going to have a bright future.

I think that the summer vacation could be shorter. The should have more days off during the schoolyear so our summer vacation would be shorter. This way we wouldnt forget so many things during the summer.

Do you agree with the proposal?
I personally do not agree with the proposal. It is hard enough to go to school from 9 till 330 and not get home until 5. Then I have an average of 3 hours of homework per night. Theres no way I would get any sleep or get all my work done at home if they lengthened the school day. However if would agree if schools gave more time in school to get work done and then lengthen the day.

Do you agree with a longer school year?
I feel that it would be beneficial for there to be a longer school year, considering students usually forget what they have learned during the school year.

Do you agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future?
I think that our lagging education systems will impact our future especially if other countries are moving ahead in the world and we are just staying here or even declining. I want my children to have a better education system when they attend school and and even better system for my children's children.

What ideas do you have to propose to improve the current educational system?
I think if the government gave better school fundings to all schools then the children could have the right tools that they need to grow in their educational careers. Also if children need longer school years to help them prosper then so be it.

Do you agree with the proposal?
I do not agree with President Obama's proposal.

Do you agree with a longer school year?
No, the school AND the school day should not be increased. The school year and days are already long as they are.

Do you agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future?
Our lagging education system will definitely impact our future. If there are less smart people in the US then we might begin to lose the few smart people we have to countries like China.

What ideas do you have to propose to improve the current educational system?
Privatization of the entire school system will help. It is a well known fact that private schools do way better than public schools. Competition int he school market would lead to lower costs for students and a greater higher quality of education.

I do not agree with this new proposal. More school causes us to have to pay more money. With the economy going the way it is, we should not have to pay extra just because the president wants more school. Also, students need breaks from school. Barrack Obama said that the kids in different countries score higher than us. This might mean that there is a problem with the teaching method and not the amount of time we stay in school. School should not be over the summer because summer is a time where you can actually spend time with you family. During school days, students are too stressed out about school and don't spend much time with their family.

Courtney Barrios said...

I disagree about Obama's proposal of making the school year longer and days longer, but agree with the fact that our school system may notbe the best.
I believe that the European school system may work. Where students go to school for three months, and then have a break for a month. With having a summer break of 3 months, many students forget what was just learned the previous school year. With just a month break after 3 months of learning, many students may retain their studies more.
The fact that some parents work and are not home for their kids after school can be a problem. However, students should be able to stay after school and have maybe a study hall program until their parents get home.

alex peace said...

I personally do not agree with this policy because summer has always been there for students in need of a break in the past and it would not be fair to take that pleasure away from furure students and their children.

I personally disagree strongly. I believe that maybe in this case, our nation is blaming it on quantity, when maybe it should be blamed on quality. Obama isn't in this classrooms, he does not know whether we need more schooling or not. He's just making a blind move.

I also disagree strongly on a longer school year. Maybe they should cut some unnecessary days off during the school year, but do not take away summer for the youth, it's what drives them to get good grades throughout the year.

No, I do not think our educational system even lags. There is a high enough percentage of young people with good grades for the future of our nation to be healthy.

Pay the teachers more! If teachers keep on getting paid so little, they're going to care less and less about their classes. I believe that is the main problem in our educational system. We'd be mending a huge problem if our teachers pay increased.

whskeks000 said...

I agree with the proposal. During the summer, I waster so much time playing for the first half of the break. Then for the second half, I wish that I can go back to school soon. The break we have now is too long that students have hard time adjusting to studying and doing homework every yearIf we have more school days, then students will be used to studying throughout the whole year. I also agreee with longer school year. Students will learn much more and do more fun activities. Also, teachers would get more pay. I agree our lagging eduacation systems will impact our future. In some asian countries, all students are taking accelerated courses such as Algebra when they're in 5th grade and that's normal for them. So all of the students here should also take accelerated courses too. So our eduation systems can improve if they encourage all the students to take accelerated courses.

I disagree with part of the proposal but some aspects of it are good. School days are already long and kids are tired now, making it even longer will just have bad consequences. Summer is needed to fully de-stress after a stressing year. The whole year you stress about grades and school and even when you have short breaks like winter break or something you still stress to make sure your grades stay up afterwards. The 3 month summer break helps to relax.
If Obama adds more school days then he should make the day much shorter to make it fair.
Education will definitly impact our future. The smarter people are the more sophisticated and intellecual our society is.
Personally i believe our education system is fine and it all depends on the student. If you pay attention all year then you should be able to remember the basic concepts after summer break.

Do you agree with the proposal?
-The proposal has the right intentions for kids. Obama just wants us to be more safe and for the statistics in academics to go up.

Do you agree with a longer school year?
-I do not agree with the longer school year. I can admit that I also have a life outside of school. People like to travel during the summer or go see long missed relatives. Speaking for teens with jobs, that’s when you make the most money because you get longer hours, and I would love for my pay to increase, not decrease.

Do you agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future?
-I do believe that our lagging education will impact our future. I say this because there are many people outside of the U.S. that move at a faster pace and have longer hours. But, if we value the time we do have and work at out BEST, we should be ok.

What ideas do you have to propose to improve the current educational system?
-Schools with high statistics and low failing rates, keep doing what is necessary. Schools with lower statistics and high failing rate, change the hours or whatever there needs to be done, because they’re the ones who bring us down as a whole. Everybody shouldn’t be punished!

trixsJenkins13 said...

I also personally disagree with the proposal. I mean Amandaseagle said it best in her post. But to add, students are already busy outside of school. We participate in after school activities, such as team sports, clubs, organizations, etc. Adding extra school hours is really pointless and way too much stress on an average kid. During break(summertime), it gives children to relax and focus on other things, rather than worrying about mathematical functions and correct grammar. Adding hours could burn a kid's brain out!

I dont neccesarily agree with the longer school year but I do understand the logic behind it. many argue that Americans are lacking in education compared to foreign countries around the world, and i somewhat agree with it. But I don't think that a longer school year would do much good. Students would already be too upset and they wouldnt be encourgaed to learn. In that way, it's a lose - lose situation. And I'm pretty sure that the wellbeing of these students' lives socially is not being considered. A longer school year would definitely have an effect on that so i thionk all aspects of teh situation must be considered first before a final decision is made

Renita Williams said...

Yes I agree with the proposal because I trust Obama's ideas and directions. I also trust Arne Duncan's insights because he worked for CPS and under his leadership, CPS test scores soared.

I do not agree with a longer school year but I am open minded to a longer school day. I feel that every school deserves a summer vacation, especially Whitney Young since we work so hard.

Yes I agree that a lack of education will impact our future because science and math abilities are crucial to developments in new technology such as computers and warfare.

My ideas are extremely similar to Obama's proposal. But instead of just increasing school time, let's increase the quality of the teachers. Raise the teaching certification standards and I'm sure that the current educational system will improve

Anonymous said...

Do you agree with the proposal?
I agree with the proposal in the aspect that for some kids, school is a save haven and sometimes their only means of a decent meal. The proposal might not be well recieved by everyone, but those living in low-income neighborhoods would definitley benefit from this.

Do you agree with a longer school year? I don't know if I agree with the longer school year, but the year-round school system seems to be most effective.

Do you agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future?
Definitely, we as the youth, are the future. If we dont have a strong background in education, our views and opinions will be based off of trivial things such as society and television.

What ideas do you have to propose to improve the current educational system?
I think more after school programs and interactive tutoring programs are the first step to improving the educational system. Keeping kids in school longer in this generation will just cause rebellion. Most of us are used to the nine months of school and three months off. Such a drastic change will only result in kids skipping class and school.

I agree with his proposal for a longer school year. Students need to be constantly involved with the education process, and summer is definitely no time to lose knowledge just for fun. Fun is temporary, and Obama is just looking at the long-term effects of lengthening the school year.

Ian Engels said...

I also believe that our future will be affected by our "lagging" school system, but in a way that can not be fixed or changed a few extra hours or days of school.

Our school system could be improved in many ways. First I believe we should have 3 day weekends and 4 day school weeks. We should also have fewer classes every day, make the classes longer, and not have the same classes every day. That would make learning easier on students and teachers because there wouldn’t be as much rapid change and everyone’s minds would be more focused and well rested.

fredricks.amber said...

Also, teachers need to be more involved if they already aren't. There also needs to be more of an incentive for teachers who teach children with high grades and standardize test scores. That incentive also needs to trickle down to the students as well.

Ian Engels said...

I disagree with the proposed extension of the school day.I believe that if children are in school longer they will become even less motivad to work than they are now. I believe breaks are form of like a motivation, or a reason to keep going. I personally live for break. I also believe that hiatuses from school give you time to learn important life and social skills. Somethings just can't be learned in a classroom. That is what breaks and vacations are for.

I also believe that our future will be affected by our "lagging" school system, but in a way that can not be fixed or changed a few extra hours or days of school.

Do you agree with the proposal?

I don't agree with the proposal for a longer school year, but i do agree with a longer school day. A longer school year will just increase the dropout rates and lower the aattendance rates if you ask me. You can't just throw somebody into that type of system and expect them to adapt immediately.

Do you agree with a longer school year?

No, i do not agree with a longer school year because we won't have as long of a break during the summer. During summer, it gets really hot, and with that weather who wants to go to school??

Do you agree that our lagging education systems will impact our future?

Yes, i do think that it will impact our future, but not very much. The only way it'll really take a toll on us if we decide to work in another country where they're education system was more intense than ours. Also, it could impact us if we were in some type of competition with like a company in a more prestigious country.

What ideas do you have to propose to improve the current educational system?

I think that we should have longer school days instead of school years. That way, we'll be able to have the same amount of break time, students will be learning more, and children will be in a safe place during the daytime.

Afzal said...

I don't agree with President Obama’s proposal. I think that school is already pretty long and for some students the workload gets overwhelming.
A longer school year will make students more rebellious and cause them to cut class more often. Students need a break from studying. We already have summer school, so if parents feel that their kids are in danger or off track in the summer, they can just enroll them in summer classes.
I don't that the education system will cause us to fall behind. We already have highly selective high schools and colleges that bring out the best in academics in their students.
To improve our education system, I think we need to change what classes we take. I don't think that we need 2 classes for art or 2 classes of music. These classes shouldn't be mandatory. They could use this time to teach consumer ED or problem solving courses.

Marco said...

I don't agree with the proposal. I think that the proposal for a longer school year is going to be ineffective because students get really tired at the end of the school year and imagine if they have a longer school year. They would be even more tired and so it would be harder to concentrate. If it is harder to concentrate then learning would be more difficult. i think that our lagging education will effect us in the future but promoting a longer school year isd not the answer. We have to try to start to educate children in a better way. Maybe if we are more strict about education and have colleges that cost less our education level would blossom. I also think we can start learning math, science, and maybe even a second language at a younger age.

campbell.robert83 said...

Yes i agree and disagree at the same time. There are some advantages and disadvantages. Such as the cost of sending all of those kids to school, and making sure all of them want to learn. Kids do forget how to learn or what they learned, but everyone needs a break from school, however ther are the kids who if they go home, they would've been better off staying at school. It all depends on what the situation is, the students matter, not the school. They should only givwe help to those who need it, or who are seeking it. other than that, the main reason schools should stay open, is for extra help.

I disagree with a longer school year being the solution to school reform and making our children more sucessful in the fuuture. In the statistics given in the article, children in other countries who spend less hours in school are scoring higher than the average american US student
These statistics show us that the time spent in classrooms arent used wisely and no matter how long you extend it, it wont be of use if you dont know how to use it effectively.
My ideas are very unique for improving the educational system w ehave today. I believe that if a child/student should learn the basic necessities and fundamental skills needed to function in everyday society.
However, I feel after a certain age if that student (child) knows what career they want to pursue all classes should be in preparation for that career and/or field they are going into.
Not only will the child be interested in what they are learning because its a career of their choice but it prepares them for the job they will do in the future for the rest of their life.

I personally disagree. More time = more money, and some kids are burnt out everyday after school because of the workload and hours in class. They need to take a break. Druing the break, they can learn many other skills, some that cant be taught at schools.
If the parents what their children to have a safe place to go, schools should offer after school programs, but not more instrucrional time.

I disagree with the proposal because most kids are tired after school and some go home and sleep. We shouldn't have a longer school year, a lot of other places have shorter school years but get higer scores which means a longer school year does not affect your score. No because in the past we had the same amount of scool time and it did not have much impact.

I some what agree with the proposal. During the summer I basically forget everything I learned that school year. I would not mind going to minamal amount of summer classes during the summer. But during the year the school days are long enough, I'm all for shorter school days and maybe more days.

A longer school year would be okay with me if we had breaks through out the year not just winter break and summer break.

No i do not think that our lagging educations systems will effect the future. When you apply for a job a college degree is a college degree its not all that importanat where you went. The application process is already very competitive to get into a good high school and college.

My proposal would include shorter days so that you can do more than homework eat and a sport each day and go year round with a longer year just including breaks inbetween.

Personally, I do feel that what Barack Obama is proposing does have some degree of logic with his preposition. Nowadays, especially in the work world, there is an incredible demand for expertise in certain fields. The only way to master the skills of these fields is to have a solid education. Therefore, it makes sense to have more effective class time use. However, I dont feel that there needs to be more actual school time. I just feel that we should use the time that we already have in class more efficiently and more productively so that we can all develop good fundamental a solid fundamental education

I totally disagree with this proposal! Its bad enough schools give out saturday school as a form of discipline, but if it becomes mandatory I truly think I'll go crazy! Who cares if students in Asia or India are smarter than a 5th grader? Sure, kids forget majority of what they learned over the summer, but thats up to the teacher to re-incorporate those things. And regardless of whether a student has idle time once their out of school, it should be up to that particular student to find something productive to do with their time. I don't know what Barack is thinking, but if he pays any attention to the drop out statistics....adding more school hours isn't going to help....Thats just what I think...Claudia!

I feel that a longer school day is neccassary to a certain extent. I feel that regardless of how long the day is if the student isn't focused then that really wouldn't matter. Also we have very short attention spans so the longer the class is the quicker some people minds wonder, for the simple fact they aern't used to being in a class this long. i personally do not agree with a longer school year because it's unfair to us. you want us to have longer days and a longer school year no way. i want to be able to sleep late and enjoy my entire summer vacation because i know i earned it. i know that i did what i had to do during the school year and this is my reward or at least part of it. i believe that if students were more motivated then the time they have in school would be put to good use. if a student was really motivated then they wouldn't need longer school days or years because they would always be on top of their work and always trying to improve even on their own time.

I do not agree with the president's proposal because kids are already in school for an extended part during the day. And American students are in school more then any other countries students. Along with the school day, schools give students a few hours of homework a night to do. Although this is a option and some students dont do it, this is almost equilvilant of being in school for another hour or more.

I do not agree with a longer school year either because the summer is time meant to be spent with friends and family. If the school year was extended this would give families less time to visit realatives who live in different states. Another reason would be that the summer is not that long as it is right now. We are in school almost nine months and only out of school for about three. Adding a few more days would not change the outcome that we are getting right now.

I do not believe that our lagging education will effect the future. I believe this because all kids are not doing bad in school. The percentage of kids who aren't doing well in school is very low and that is probably because they do not try. I believe if people would try then the school system wouldnt seem like it was lagging.

The proposal I have to help the school system would to start school later in the day. I believe this would greatly help students because this would mean that the students would get more sleep. With more sleep, students will be more alert and wont have the need to fall asleep in class where they could be missing valuable information.

I personally I agree with the proposal, but only to a certain point. I know that kids, even us teenagers do forget alot of things over the summer. Kids don't think so much about school while they're having fun during their break. I personally think that school days shoul not be made longer, I think that it is better to make the school year longer instead. If school days are longer than kids might get overwhelmed from doing so much work for so many hours! I mean yes there is a good possibility that we will see improvements in grades and test scores, but we can also see these improvements if we make the school year longer and keep on being involved with summer school programs and optional after school programs.

I disagree, because i dont think that everyone should have to stay in school for extra hours or year round for under achievers. I dont think its fair if you work hard throughout the school year and have to do it during the summer also. My suggestion would be to allow the students who have to or want to take summer classes.

I do not agree with having longer school days or a longer school year because students will become too over-worked. Exhaustion will be a factor in the longer school days. Kids will lose focus in the classroom and will eventually not want want to do the work anymore.

The main thing that we should focus on to fix this problem would be to make sure that all students receive the equal education regardless of what school they attend.

I would love if there was to be an education reform of some sort. I think kids spend too little time at school. Americans have so many "holidays" and times when kids are not in school due to teacher institution days. I believe that the school year should be extended and summer vacation be decreased. I cannot tell you how many times i have forgotten important information during the summer break, and so have my fellow peers, that the teacher has to spend weeks to review instead of starting new material. I dont know if i necessarily agree if the school day itself should be longer. My brother stays two hours after school three days a week at his grammer school so he can take Algebra 1 for a high school credit. My mother and I share some concern for him as it starts to get darker earlier, and he walks home from school arriving home around 5pm. I would love to see a more challenging lessons plans given. I think that it is important that we give students a healthy challenge without pressuring them with too high of expectations.

I do not agree with this proposal.

If the school day was to be decreased I wouldn't mind having a longer school year. As lond as it wasn't drastically longer than the current school year.

I don't believe it will affect our future because the job market has been sculpted around our poor education system.

I do not agree with the proposal. Longer schools will make kids more tired than they are today. If they get more tired, then they won't be able to pay any attention to the class.

I do not agree with the longer school year because students need time to atleast do their homework.

I agree with that because it will hurt us with the next generation which will be working in our businesses.

I do not agree with the proposal the biggest problem in students is getting them focused. its the diference in becoming a successful student or being a complete under-acheiver. The summer is when kids fell a little lethargic and leisurely. They really dont want to be working on school distracted by the heat. We are america , not china nor taiwan nor japan, thats what separates us from them. Just because we're behind doesnt mean anything especially since we've been behind them for quite some time.

Longer school years is something i can accept but nothing more than about 20 more days. Most of the breaks are either vacation periods schoool development days or report card pickup. Add those days in june to give students a chance to remember what they learned the whole school year.

NO. I believe the U.S. although not the smartest country in the world is in ok shape. Getting into high schools and elementary schools is like competing for a job or getting into college. Also intelligence is increasing every day thats how mathematics and science is even surviving.

I believe school should stay the same as it is. No one knows exactly how to make it better and making a decision based on one group's desire can get you in trouble.

In a way I do agree with the proposal because I forget a lot of stuff I "learn" in school over summer break. The sole fact that most other countries' students perform better than American students should spark reform.
One aspect of reform that I dont agree with is the longer school day. I think six hour days in the classroom is enough!
If we increase the total school days in the academic year and decrease the hours spent in school each day, students will perform much better.

President Obama believes that longer school days and longer school years will make American students more successful, and I disagree. Speaking from a students perspective, I can honestly say that longer school days will leave me bored and uninterested in school. I'm pretty sure that many other students may feel the same way. However it may help those who live in poverty in ways such as, providing meals and getting them help and providing social services. But why force all students tom attend schools with longer school days and years? Why not have those who need the help attend those selected schools with longer days and years?

President Obama strongly believes that longer school days and years will increase students' learning abilities, ultimately raising test scores. But i don't agree. Speaking from a students perspective, i can hinestly say that longer school days will leave me bored and uninterested in school. However this could be a safehaven for those who live in poverty. It could provide meals and social services to those who need them. But why force those who don't need the extra help to stay in school longer? Why not only allow those who need it to obtain the extra help? Maybe not through longer school days, possibly through afterschool tutoring, or maybe even saturday school.

Yes, I do agree that the students of the United States are behind in school compared to many other countries. However, the suicide rate in these countries are much higher than ours. I believe the lack of time to relax has something to do with this. Therefore, I do not agree with the proposal. Most students are already overwhelmed with the school time we already have. School, homework and extra-curricular activities already make students have long days. If the school days were to be extended or additional days were to be added, I'm pretty sure the suicide rate would go up in our country as well. -Valencia D.

I think if we are going to have a longer school year, we should have shorter school days. That way we are meeting the requirement for the certain amount of hours we have to be in school and everybody is happy. Getting out of school earlier would also mean that we had more time to do our homework if you play a sport or are in a club and just creates more opportunities for kids after school.

A longer school year might be a good idea but like my last argument, everybody has got to be happy and come to an agreement. if we had a longer school year then we would have to have breaks much more frequently. I think at least a week off every month might be ok and shorter school days would also have to be arranged because I know we would be exceeding the amount of hours we need.
